or men. It is common for women to be the abused individuals in relationships and will be the
focus of this analysis. Domestic violence is a very serious social problem that needs more
attention in order to find a solution. Morgan and Chadwick (2010) state that domestic
violence refers to acts of violence that occur between people who have, or have had, an
intimate relationship in domestic setting such as marriage, dating, family, or cohabitation.
Also domestic violence has many different forms of behaviour including physical aggression,
assault, threats of sexual abuse, emotional abuse, controlling or domineering, intimidation,
stalking that is well not acceptable by society.
Domestic violence has been described by the Nevada Attorney Generals Office as a violent
crime committed in the context of an intimate relationship. It is characterized by acts of
violence, power and coercion intended to control another persons behaviour (Nevada
Attorney General, 2011). This abuse is mainly exerted by men is a way to control women in
relationships. In Bangladesh, women face various forms of violence, ranging from wife
abuse to rape, dowry killings, acid throwing, sexual harassment, and sexual slavery through
trafficking in women (Zaman, 1999), among which domestic violence is widely prevalent both
in urban and rural areas as an everyday matter of womens lives. Deeply rooted subordinate
positions of women allow men to dominate and control not only their families and resources
(Schuler et al., 1998 stated in Hossain, 2007) but also lives of women. Consequently,
societal norms and traditional values associated with gender roles and supremacy within
households and society tend to trigger, dictate and provoke domestic violence against
women in Bangladesh (Koenig et al., 2003).
This domestic violence against in women in Bangladesh was evident and confirms Nevada
Generals office description of domestic violence in a recent media article where a woman
was forced to remarry her husband who threw acid in her face after she had divorced him for
being unfaithful. The 36 year old woman Nurbanu was doused with acid by her husband,
leaving her blind and disfigured after she had divorced her husband for being unfaithful after
18 years of marriage. Nurbanus mother in law has forced her into remarrying and enduring
living with her husband again after forcing her to sign affidavit to have him released from
prison, Nurbanu is one of the thousands women in recent years to fall victim to acids
violence attacks in Bangladesh (Mcdermott 2012).
Several studies have indicated that domestic violence against women, especially violence
perpetrated by a womans husband, is a serious problem in Bangladesh (Bhuiya et al.,
2003). For instance, a study by Khanom (1999) shows that most of the violence is done by
husband (46.48%). Although domestic violence includes child abuse, parent abuse and inlaw abuse committed by male aggressors on female victims, available information from
research indicated that the most common type of violence in Bangladesh against women is
domestic violence perpetrated by intimate partners or ex partners (Heise et al., 1994).
The media article that was used in this report it takes into account the feminist theoretical
tradition to situate physical violence against intimate partner in Bangladesh. Using Butler’s
(1990) performative theory and Connell’s (1995) hegemonic masculinity idea, it explain that
perpetrators, through their acts of violence, use Bangladeshi cultural norms to uphold and
reproduce hegemonic norms, and show that physical violence against intimate partner is a
form of performance by which violent men present their hyper-masculine identities.
Researchers criticize Butler’s theory of performance for overemphasizing the agency and
lacking structural and cultural constraint analysis on actors (Messner, 2000). This research
shows that Butler’s theory can be understood by analyzing how the violent acts of men are
shaped by larger structural inequality
