Responses to changes in relational uncertainty within dating relationships:
Emotions and communication strategies

Knobloch, Leanne KView profile;Solomon, Denise HaunaniView profile.Communication Studies54.3
(Fall 2003): 282-305.

Guided by the appraisal theory of
emotion, this paper examines how various emotions shape communication strategies within romantic relationships.
Events that changed people’s relational uncertainly levels provide the context
for the investigation. Participants in dating relationships (N = 141) described their experience
of relational certainty and uncertainty increasing events. Relational certainty
increases coincided with relatively high levels of happiness, and relational
uncertainty increases corresponded with heightened degrees of anger and
sadness. Integrative behaviors were a frequently reported response to both
kinds of events. Consistent with appraisal theory, specific emotions were
associated with particular strategies; however, some effects were moderated by
the type of event. The discussion highlights the utility of appraisal theory
for understanding how romantic partners manage fluctuations in relational uncertainty. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]

Relational implications of communication skill evaluations and love styles

Kunkel, AdrianneView profile;Burleson, BrantView profile. The Southern Communication Journal68.3
(Spring 2003): 181-197.

As values placed by individuals on communication skills may
associate with experiences of romantic love, this study explores relationships between communication
values and the adoption of six major love styles (Lee, 1973). Two hundred and
seventy-two participants (119 males and 153 females) completed an expanded
version of Burleson and Samter’s (1990) Communication Functions Questionnaire,
which generates judgments about the importance of several communication skills, and
Hendrick and Hendrick’s (1986) Love Attitudes Scale, which provides
assessments of love
styles. Results indicated numerous significant associations between communication
values and love
styles, sex differences in the evaluation of some communication values and in the
adoption of some love
styles, and that sex moderates relationships between some of the communication
values and love
styles

Abstract

This study explored humor production and communicator style within the
dyadic communicative relationship
between organizational managers and subordinates. Research questions considered
positive, expressive, and negative humor functions and manager-subordinate
relational style, communication
style, sex, and dyad characteristics. Results indicated that both organizational
managers and subordinates report using conversational humor, mostly positive
and expressive humor. Results also indicate communicator image, dominant or
affiliative communication
style, and sex are related to the type of conversational humor initiated by
organizational managers and subordinates. It appears that organizational
power/dominance and sex are better predictors of humor usage than other
characteristics. Overall, results suggest that relational factors, such as
one’s humor, may be important to the enactment of organizational citizenship
behaviors among subordinates. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
