Expectations for Short Papers
Introduction:
The purpose of the introduction is
to introduce the reader to the central theme of your paper. An effective
introduction goes from general to more specific information regarding the
subject you will be covering in your paper. Then, gradually narrowing down
the subject to a specific thesis statement. It should be concise,
and therefore, the reader should have no doubt as to the topic of your paper.
Because this is a short paper, the introduction must be no more than one to two
paragraphs in length. (1 to 2-paragraph maximum)
The introduction must contain the
following:
·
General statement about the subject
(succinct, pertinent background information and/or other contextual material).
·
Funnel down to more specific
information.
·
Specific thesis statement:
The thesis statement is one or two sentences (depending on the complexity of
the paper), which explicitly states the focus and direction of the writing.
Content/Analysis:
The body of the paper is comprised
of the analyzation and presentation of materials that supports your thesis
statement (overall central theme of your paper). Paragraphs must be well
developed and discuss each component necessary for the assignment.
Additionally, materials from other sources as well as examples must be used in
order to further substantiate your statements. It is not enough to just “tell”
the reader your perspective, but you must “show” the reader why you believe
your perspective is relevant. You do this by incorporating concepts and
examples. This provides more depth and analysis to the body of the paper.
(3.5 page maximum)
Conclusion:
The conclusion should be definitive
and concise. It should emphasize the significance of the thesis statement
and the issues/concepts you have discussed throughout the body of your
paper. The conclusion must provide a compelling summation to what has
previously been discussed. This helps your paper to be organized and provides
unity. (1 to 2 paragraphs maximum)
